Lay Leadership

“But whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant…For the Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve.”

MARK 10:43-45

At FUMCA, to be a leader means to follow Christ, or, as Paul wrote to the Galatians, “to put on Christ.”  That is, we are to become like Christ by serving and loving those around us.  No title or office is necessary to do this.

“The Laity are not just an important part of the church, the Laity are the church!  The Laity are the whole people of God following Christ.”

Bishop William Willimon, North Alabama Conference

Leaders of FUMCA are challenged by the question, “If our church were to close its’ doors today, who would miss it other than our members?”

Our purpose is the love one another as Christ loved us and to allow God to use us for the transformation of the world through worship, fellowship, nurturing, outreach, and service.

The North Alabama Conference defines the ministry of the Laity as:

  • Living faithfully as disciples of Jesus Christ in our everyday life.
  • Responding to God’s gifts of grace and call to serve.
  • Using our gifts and resources to serve others.
  • Loving our neighbors.
  • Living out the Gospel in all our relationships – at home, at school, at work, at play, in our communities, and in our world.

We believe that all members of FUMCA are blessed by God with their own unique ability to be leaders and to serve in His church so that His “will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.”

“Now there are a variety of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are a variety or services, but the same Lord; and there are a variety of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone.  To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.”
